08 April, 2008

The Charles Berry Reunion, 2008 has been officially cancelled because we could not come up with the numbers necessary to fullfil our agreement with the hotel and other entertainment plans. It is a sad day, but we are sure the rising cost of fuel and airline costs have also had an impact on those who would have liked to have attended but could not.

Additionally, John (Corky) Corkran has contributed many new articles and photos of the Charles Berry including the Change of Command Ceramony 14 December, 1963. When you visit his page just double click on the articles to enlarge them.

I have been working on reconfiguring some of the web pages of the Berry site. Keep an eye out for some nice changes. However, your feed back is always welcome. - - - JKBrooke, RM2, 1965.

Everyone on our "muster list" should have received a letter from the

If you did not get a letter and survey form, please contact the Military Locator & Reunion Service. Inc. Their address, phone number and web address is on their web page.

Received the following from Mac Christy!
Mac has had several calls from a guy named Jim Gavin, seeking information about a boiler explosion in Berry in 1971. He also would like to get a cruise book from that time. I have asked him to provide me with his address, etc., thinking I would put him on the muster list and send him a copy, but he has never done that. Would it be possible to put something on the web page? He is: Jim Gavin 203-932-9899 Don't work too hard!

Message received from Mac Christy -

Last night Tom Smiley’s wife called to tell me that Tom had passed away Monday, May 17th. around 1700.

Tom and I were shipmates in the USS Charles Berry DE1035 some 42 years ago. We were both “white hats” then, and Tom was one of the most “squared away” sailors I knew. Later, in the early 70’s, we were stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center at the same time. When both of us retired, we lived within 30 miles of each other in mid-Missouri. In 1980 we were room mates at a time when both of us needed a good friend.

I stopped by to see Tom a few weeks ago and he said that he would be at the Charles Berry reunion if he was still alive. And he would have. No one has had a better shipmate or friend than I had in Tom Smiley.

It is our custom to say that Tom has been transferred to the staff of the Supreme Commander, where we all will one day serve. Fair winds and following seas Tom.

We've been receiving updated "muster lists" from Mac left and right. It's great to see so many names being added. News about the reunion must be getting out in good shape. We appreciate any contacts Berry sailors have made to spread the news about the reunion, still scheduled for June 8, 9, and 10th. See you there.

Additions to our Muster List are Bob Bandle, Jim Borgeson, Charles Chadwell (D), Dennis Fogarty, Lee Morson, and Jack Riley. Further information can be found by clicking on their names above to visit their personal page.

As you may have noticed, the USS Charles Berry Web Site was down for a few weeks. Sorry about that guys. I had a little difficulty with my Internet service provider. Once we got through the red tape and unraveled the mystery, I was able to re-establish the site. Thanks for your patience and I appreciate your understanding.

Also, please contact the Webmaster when you locate any items, no matter how insignificant, relating to your Berry tour of duty. We would appreciate your allowing us to include them on the web site. 18 December, 2003

Mac Christy and I had a chance to meet again for the first time since about 1962. Mac and his wife were traveling through Georgia and we made it a point to get together over a cup of coffee. It was great to sit and visit about the Berry days, and as usual the visit was way to short as we didn't even scratch the surface about times past. We will just have to do more catching up at the reunion. I know I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Plans are rolling along for the Berry Reunion in June. We have seen quite a bit of interest in the reunion as many Berry shipmates have responded favorably. More will be published about the reunion as it comes together.

Mac has been keeping a good handle on the muster list and we have several new additions and I have added them to the Charles Berry web site. New additions include Capt. Roger Buck, R.P. (Dick) White, Chet Leeberg, Jerry Langford, Peter Johnston, Ron Stevens, and Al (Blackie) Getchell. You can just click on the name and visit their page.

Please remember to let Mac know if you have a change of address, phone number or e-mail address as we need to keep our records up to date. You can submit changed via the Berry web site if you have not added us to your address book.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and look forward to a great New Year. Merry Christmas everyone.

Jerry Brooke, webmaster

4 October, 2003

The first ever USS Charles Berry reunion will be held in Lawrence, Kansas, in June of 2004. Lawrence, Kansas is just a short drive west of Kansas City, Kansas. The specific date in June is to be determined. We are looking forward with great excitement to our first reunion. There has been a lot of interest shown so far and it will promise to be a great occasion.

For those of you who are interested in attending, please contact either myself, Jerry Brooke (e-mail), or Mac Christy (e-mail) so we can get a count for planning purposes. We need to know how many in your party, and your hotel or camping requirements. Please notify any other Berry shipmates who you stay in touch with. We will post more specific information on this web page as plans come together. Let us know as soon as possible if you think you can make it.

If you plan on attending, please be collecting your photos and other Berry memorabilia, items of historic significance and stories. Bring them with you to help us make this a great and memorable reunion.

(Note) Please see item below dated 26 July, 2003. We are still getting calls inquiring about a Berry reunion in December, '03. Not true, there is no reunion for the USS Charles Berry, DE-1035, in December '03.

21 September, 2003

Master Chief Mac Christy, one of our shipmates from the Charles Berry will be going into the hospital in October for heart bypass surgery. We want to wish him well and a speedy recovery. 26 July, 2003

It was recently published in the American Legion Magazine that the USS Charles Berry, DE1035 was having a reunion. Please be advised that any talk of a Charles Berry reunion is preliminary in nature and that no date or time has been set. A reunion has been suggested for 2004 to see how much interest there would be. Apparently there is a great interest from the responses received from the American Legion article. More information will follow on this page regarding any reunions planned. Please visit our newsletter page for updated info.

April 29, 2003
