1Jerry: I made one cruise on the Berry to West Pac in 1963. I served from 1961 to 1963. There was always something going on, which was a lot of fun. There were serious times too. The time we were scheduled to port in San Diego, but we steamed around all weekend hunting for an unidentified sub. Which turned out to be a whale. Don`t know if that was true or not, you know how the scuttlebut flew.

Hello Jerry, I remember you from your pictures. It was great to hear from an old shipmate. I left the Berry early in 1963 so Jerald Beals probably came on board after that. I didn`t know him, but it`s interesting that my replacement would have the same last name. I remember being Station ship in Hong Kong. I did Shore Patrol for a week, man what a week. I remember steaming in to Kaohsiung Taiwan and how bad the harbor smelled. I`ll try and find some of my shipboard photos and post them. Great to hear from you. Melvin (Mel) Beals.
